The Continental Army was the Army formed after the outbreak of the War of Independence of the United States by the 13 colonies that later became the United States of America. Established by a resolution of the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775 as a paramilitary service, created to coordinate the military acts of the Thirteen Colonies in their fight against Great Britain. General George Washington was the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the War.

Most of the Continental Army was dissolved in 1783 after the Treaty of Paris with which the war ended. The remaining units of soldiers possibly formed the nucleus of what would later become the United States Army.
