The crystal merchant appears in the book as a cautionary tale. Although he is a kind, and a mostly content, character, he is profoundly afraid. The merchant feels unable to accomplish his dream of travelling to Mecca because he believes he will have nothing to dream about and fight for once he does so. Therefore, although he is aware of his bad choice, he feels unable to pursue his Personal Legend. This shows Santiago that fear often prevents people from pursuing their Personal Legend.
