A television camera is positioned 4000 ft from the base of a rocket launching pad. The angle of elevation of the camera has to c

hange at the correct rate in order to keep the rocket in sight. Also, the mechanism for focusing the camera has to take into account the increasing distance from the camera to the rising rocket. Let’s assume the rocket rises vertically and its speed is 600 ft/s when it has risen 3000 ft.
(a) How fast is the distance from the television camera to the rocket changing at that moment?
(b) If the television camera is always kept aimed at the rocket, how fast is the camera’s angle of elevation changing at that same moment?

The position equation is s = -16t^2 + vot + so where s is height of the object in feet, vo is the initial velocity of the object
Hunter-Best [27]

A.      For this case, let us set the variables:

s = 0 (final destination on the ground)

t = unknown

vo = 0

so = 8000 ft

Using the equation, we calculate for t:

0 = -16 t^2 + 0t + 8000

t = 22.36 s

B.      For this case:

s = unknown

t = 22.36 s

vo = 600 miles/hr = 880 ft/s

so = 0

Using the equation, we calculate for s:

s = -16*(22.36)^2 + 880*22.36 + 0

s = 11, 677.29 ft = 2.21 miles
