The U.S. military fighting in Vietnam found that guerilla warfare was difficult to combat because they were fighting an enemy that new the territory, could camouflage easily in the villages and the rainforest and also developed supply techniques like underground tunnels. The U.S. military did not suffered from a shortage of soldiers, but the lack of a defined enemy front made it difficult and they were not prepared to cope with it.

On the other hand, most of the opposition against American intervention was based on moral grounds, both because it was an intervention in order to stop the spread of communism in Vietnam, but also because the drafttargeted mainly poor, working class and people of colour. The troops' lack of preparation for guerilla warfare was not a reason for opposition.
