Palmer raids were the numbers of raids conducted by the United States Department of Justice during the First Red Scare of  November 1919. It was by the order of President Woodrow Wilson to exile the suspect of radical leftists immigrants of Eastern Europe and Italy.  And exile them from America. The arrest was supervised by the Attorney general A. Mitchell Palmer. Around 556 citizens were deported along with the prominent leaders of the Leftist.

The raids were conducted as per Red Scare. The First Red Scare was the period marked by political agitation and the contended escalation of Communism and terrorism in the American society. The Scare emerged due to the hyper-nationalism during First World War and Russian Revolution. The American authorities noticed the menace of the communist revolution in the form of organized labors. The authorities also noticed anti-immigration nativism among the Americans which could also lead to political and social instability.

As a result of it, the General Intelligence Division lead by Edgar Hoover was constituted to collect details about radicals in America. It investigated many organization through raids from November 1919, till January 1920 and interrogated thousands of arrestee activist.
