It keeps the masses confused and unable to use common sense as a revolutionary tool.

Further Explanation:

Double think is one of the founding principles of any political party and it is essentially used as a technique of believing in two ideas which are opposite to each other at the same time in one’s mind. Famous writer George Orwell has defined double think as a “Reality Control”. Double think is the ability to use Logic against logic and that is done in order to believe in any information which is initiated or propagated by the party.

The usage of double think also allows the party to maintain control over its populace and further enables the government to alter the governmental facts and statistics without being questioned. For members of the party, acceptance of the agenda of Big Brother is very important and also believes that they have always been at war against one enemy. Members of the party must use the strategy of double think to accept the current stance of the government.

I encountered this question before. The underlined idiom was "SHE PUT HER NOSE TO THE FIRE". This question also had choices. These were:

She was cold as she wrote her speech, so she sat by the fire.
She worked hard to finish her speech for the assembly.
She was proud of the speech once she finished it.
She finished the speech in a very short amount of time.

The underlined idiom tells the reader that SHE FINISHED THE SPEECH IN A VERY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.

When you put your nose to the fire, you don't last long because of the heat. Thus, you only spend a short amount of time putting your nose to the fire.
