By melting of mile-thick glaciers, five fantastic freshwater seas are created. These seas are altogether known today as The Great Lakes. The Great Lakes are situated northeast of the Rocky Mountains. The Great lakes constitute Superior, Michigan, Huron, Eire and Lake Ontario. The great lakes are the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth. These lakes contain 21% of the world's surface fresh water.

Huron, Erie, Michigan, Ontario and Superior are all lakes that are formed in the same way, thus have the same origin, they are all glacial lakes. These lakes formed on places where there were glaciers in the ice age. They were valleys filled with ice. Once the ice started melting they became lakes, lakes that got their water from glaciers.
