Athens is where the late Greek philosophy was developed... at that time philosophy included also scientific subjects. Architecture was also way more developed in Athens compared to Sparta. If we talk about Doric (Spartan)  art we always think about simple music, about simple architecture and so on. Athens would eventually influence all of the so called "western world" from all aspects, whereas the Spartans only remain in our head as those brave war-faring people who stood bravely against the Persians... So yeah...Athens had definitely a longer lasting effect
