By the beginning of the 19th century, slavery in the U.S. was firmly established with a series of statutes and penal codes enacted in various states to regulate the activity of slaves and all conduct involving slaves and free blacks. With the Louisiana Purchase, the question of slavery became both geographical and political, and ushered in a period of national debate between pro- and anti-slavery states to gain political and economic advantage. But by 1820, Congress was embroiled in the debate over how to divide the newly acquired territories into slave and free states.

The Mayflower Compact was the agreement in which the Pilgrims agreed to make decisions collectively. This included all males of eighteen year of age and older in the new colonies of what is now the United States. The men signing this contract had fled religious persecution from King James of England and had moved to Leiden (in the Netherlands) temporarily. They stated their allegiance to the Lord in the Mayflower Compact.
In response to taxation without representation, the colonists were very angry and frustrated. One way they protested was by purchasing domestic products, as imports from Britain were highly taxed. Another way they protested was by the Boston Tea Party, where over 100 colonists dumped over 45 tons of tea into the Boston Harbor, which would cost around $1 million worth of tea nowadays! In response to the Tea Party, Britain closed the Boston Harbor as punishment, which cut off transportation and trade. Hope this helps! :)
