The solutions to this will be found where the graph goes through the x-axis...when y = 0.  Since f(x) and "y =" are interchangeable, this makes sense.  When you graph it and use your "trace" button you will find that the solutions are -1.8608, -.254102, and 2.11491

Answer:

-1.86, -0.25 and 2.11

Step-by-step explanation:

In the figure  attached a plot of the function is shown. The solutions for x when f(x) = 0 are also given.

To check if a given x is solution of f(x) = 0, just replace x value in the formula and verify if the function is or not equal to zero.

x           f(x)

-2.11      (-2.11)^3 - 4(-2.11) -1 = -1.95

-1.86     (-1.86)^3 - 4(-1.86) -1 ≅ 0

-0.25    (-0.25)^3 - 4(-0.25) -1 ≅ 0

0.25     (0.25)^3 - 4(0.25) -1 = -1.98

1.86      (1.86)^3 - 4(1.86) -1 = -2

2.11       (2.11)^3 - 4(2.11) -1 ≅ 0

Therefore, the solutions are: -1.86, -0.25 and 2.11

Simplify polynomial
Kay [80]

Answer:

j² - 5j²k - 2

Step-by-step explanation:

3j² - j²k - 6 - 4j²k - 2j² + 4

To simplify this polynomial, we can collect like terms. A term is number(s) or variable(s) that are grouped together by multiplication. <u>Like terms have the same variable and exponent</u>.

We have three groups of like terms:

The j-squares (j²), the j-squared k (j²k) and the constants (no variable).

Remember to include the negatives!

The j-squares are: 3j² ; -2j²

The j-squares k are: - j²k ; - 4j²k

The constants are: - 6 ; 4

Simplify:

3j² - j²k - 6 - 4j²k - 2j² + 4

Rearrange the polynomial by like terms

= (- j²k - 4j²k) +  (3j² - 2j²) + (- 6 + 4)

Add or subtract the like terms

= (-5j²k) + (j²) + (-2)

Remove brackets and rearrange so the negative is not first

= j² + - 5j²k + - 2

Simplify where two signs are together. Adding a negative is subtraction.

= j² - 5j²k - 2                  Simplified

Find the equation for the line passing through the point (−1,1) ( − 1 , 1 ) and parallel to the line whose equation is y=2x+12.
tekilochka [14]
So, parallel lines have the same slope, therefore a parallel line to 2x+12, will have the same slope as that one, so which is it?   \bf y=\stackrel{slope}{2}x\stackrel{y-intercept}{+12}

so, we're really looking for the equation of a line whose slope is 2, and runs through -1,1.

\bf \begin{array}{lllll}&#10;&x_1&y_1\\&#10;% (a,b)&#10;&({{ -1}}\quad ,&{{ 1}})&#10;\end{array}&#10;\\\\\\&#10;% slope = m&#10;slope = {{ m}}= \cfrac{rise}{run} \implies 2&#10;\\\\\\&#10;% point-slope intercept&#10;\stackrel{\textit{point-slope form}}{y-{{ y_1}}={{ m}}(x-{{ x_1}})}\implies y-1=2[x-(-1)]&#10;\\\\\\&#10;y-1=2(x+1)\implies y-1=2x+2\implies y=2x+3
