This happened in 1860 when Lincoln was nominated to become president and actually won the presidential elections, becoming the 16th President of the United States. He won over John C. Breckinridge, John Bell, and Stephen Douglass.
The Equal Rights Amendment grants equal rights for both men and women. This was presented in the Congress for the first time in 1923. One positive effect is that there is no tolerance for gender discrimination especially at work. Women's rights have legal basis that they can run a business without the husband's consent.
John McCain went on 23 combat missions, the twenty third being the one where he became a prisoner of war in Vietnam which became a famous thing. When he returned home he remained in the military but as a commander and didn't fly into combat missions.
