Why does navy wear gloves and scarves during general quarters?

This is called anti flash gear. They wear it to prevent being burned by any possible short term explosions or fire exposures. If something bad happens and something malfunctions, the gloves and scarves will protect them from the fire but only if it's not long exposure.
