After the Emancipation proclamation, the union army actively began recruiting African american soldiers to fight. Emancipation proclamation was a presidential proclamation and an executive order given by president Abraham Lincoln in 1963 which changed the federal legal status of people enslaved in the designated areas of the south to become free.
