Sectionalism has quite a few definitions. I don't know what it means, but I'm willing to do some research and provide you with the best definition.
DEFINE SECTIONALISM:

WHY TWO DEFINITIONS?
This word could mean a few different things depending on how you use it, so I'm going to leave it up to you to find out which definition you want to use.
<span>The entire area from San Francisco to Sonora changed because of the number of people who came to seek gold. San Francisco had ships left in the harbor by crew and passengers to seek gold. The city grew from a sleepy Spanish town to a rowdy crime ridden jumping off point to the gold fields. Stockton grew because it was close to Sacamento and Marysville began in the gold rush along with other gold rush towns. Miners dug up the countryside, washed away hillsides with hydraulic equipment, and created mines. There were several different factors that caused the US to become a part of the imperialist movement, including:
1) Industrialization- The invention of technologies that allowed for the mass production of goods allowed businesses to make more of their products than ever before. Due to their increased ability to make large sums of goods, these individuals wanted the US to expand their global influence so that they may have new consumers to sell their products too.
2) Social Darwinism- This idea revolves around the concept of the "survival of the fittest." Many Americans felt that the US was a superior society that should spread its ideas and influence in order to help less civilized countries/territories.
