the four zones found in the ocean:

the intertidal zone, which is the area of the seashore that's underwater at high tide and above water level at low tide. this zone also has various kinds of organisms, like seastars, sea urchins and a lot of different species of coral !

the pelagic zone, which could be described as all of the sea other than the sea along the shoreline or the bottom of the ocean. it's funny because the word is actually derived from ancient greek, and the word pelagic literally means

"open sea" !

the abyssal zone, which can also be called the abyssopelagic zone (i don't even know how to say that-) describes the "depths" or the very bottom of the ocean, especially between about 10,000 and 20,000 feet (3,000 and 6,000 m) down !

and the benthic zone, which is made up of the "bottom", like the bottom of a lake or ocean floor, the sediment surface, and some sub surface layers. there's actually organisms living in that zone, too, and they're called benthos ! (i think that's really cute, lil benthos uwu)

The reason for the loss of color after the industrial revolution is that the light-colored moths were "selected against" by predators. These birds could only see the light ones against the newly dark, sooted background. Over time, these predators could no longer distinguish the dark ones from their natural dark, sooted background. Thus more light-colored moths stood out against the dark soot, and were eaten. And more dark-colored moths eluded the birds, survived to reproduce, passing on more of their dominant genes for dark color to their offspring. After several decades of hundreds of thousands of generations, most of the later generations were dark, due to selective advantage of camouflage to survive predation.
