1. How does the author want the reader to feel while reading "The Cask of Amontillado"?

The author wishes to prepare readers for the crime about to go on. The narrator wants to attain empathy. Even though he feels guilty, he tries to justify his crime and make readers understand the reason behind his actions hoping it will make it better. The narrator also shows a very dark hatred towards Fortunato and expresses these feeling to show the reader how he feels.

2. What techniques does the author use to help you visualize the place, the people, and the events that are taking place within the story?

Edgar Allan Poe uses a lot of descriptive words, and figurative language making the reader think what is going on is happening right in front of them. He also describes in a way that would make it a dark and cold setting.

3. How has the author described the characters to make them seem like real people?

The author used various writing techniques to describe the appearance and the attitude of the characters, and the personalities of each individual. This would make you think they’re real people in the real world.

4. Does the author expect the reader to make an emotional connection to the story? Explain your answer.

The author is most certainly trying to make an emotional connection to the story. When Poe is writing, he stops to describe the characters emotional appeal and how they feel at that very moment and the thoughts that run through their minds. The way he writes is a way that would persuade our minds to feel the same feeling that the narrator writes making us feel as if we were the narrator. In which this would lead to us thinking Fortunato is evil, because the narrator describes him in that way.

5. Think back to the events that take place in "The Cask of Amontillado," and think about the attitudes and actions of the characters. Now, write a theme statement for "The Cask of Amontillado."

I believe the theme would be “revenge is not the answer”. I believe this because once Fortunato is dead the narrator feels a void inside and feels a strong sense of guilt and regret. The author showed that the narrator is a very psychotic person and thought he was supposed to get relief but only brought him pain.

We can choose the following synonyms to substitute the words in the sentences:

10. C. gathered

11. D. opening

12. B. sound

13. A. inspiring awe and wonder

What is the meaning of the words?

 • The verb "to muster" means to assemble or collect something. Thus, we must choose the option that presents the same meaning (a synonym). In this case, letter C, "gathered" is the best one.
 • A "breach" is a gap or a rupture on something, especially a wall or a barrier. The option that means the same is letter D, "opening".
 • The idiom "hale and hearty" is used to refer to someone who is healthy and vigorous, especially when talking about older people. Among the options, the best one is B, "sound".
 • Finally, we say someone is "formidable" when we find them impressive. With that in mind, we can see that the best option is letter A, "inspiring awe and wonder."

IgorLugansk [536]

The viewpoint gathered from the passage is:

Sarah’s determination to hide with her brother rather than wait for the Germans is admirable.

Explanation:

Sarah begins the passage by wondering if the brother is going to sit there and let the Germans take him away and then says that surely she would not let that happen.

This is the line that sets up the passage for what is to be narrated for the whole passage which is her plans and her determination to save her brother from sure death in the German death camps.

It is her foresight that has allowed her to understand what is going to happen and she willingly takes steps to avoid it.
