Why did Sparta become a military society

 The Spartans became a mill state simply to survive, however in doing so became a good at it. It that that they were the first ones to write the military manuals in training soldiers, their methods were brutal but they also pulled results. It got to the stage where other Greek nations could not match Sparta in combat.
