Nomadic life was the way in which most Native American tribes lived before colonization. However, as European settlers began to increase in numbers, Native Americans were pushed out of their lands and placed in reservations. Reservations had some commonalities with their past way of life, as well as some differences.

Similarities:

Many of their traditional ways of life, as well as the structure of their communities was maintained.

People were generally able to maintain their native language.

Differences:

The land in reservations was usually less fertile, making agriculture difficult.

Native Americans were confined to this area, and not allowed to relocate unless they gave up their way of life.

Some traditions that required Native Americans to be nomadic could no longer be practiced.
