The narrator reacted to the dreaded sentence of death handed down to him BY BLACKING OUT.

The Pit and the Pendulum is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe. The story is about a prisoner, who endured much torment. The story opens with the trial of the narrator of the story. The narrator was been tried by a panel of judges. At the end of the trial, the narrator was sentence to death and this makes him to black out.
