The Europeans ventured first into Africa, as it is the next continent (by definition) next to Eurasia. As trade first ocurred, they went to explore new trade routes. The known age of exploration, took many people willing to venture into the unknown and establish trade posts.

The Europeans quickly adopted a colonization process, enslaving people and taking away most of the key raw materials demanded in the European markets.

Properly speaking European exploration of Sub-Saharan Africa started with the Age of Discovery in the 15th century, led by Portugal under Henry the Navigator. As they explored a new Sea route India , they discovered also routes to the Far East.
