(04.07) A fuel is purified by passing it through a clay pipe. Each foot of the clay pipe removes a fixed percentage of impuritie

s in the fuel. Let f(x) represent the amount of pollutants, in tons, left in the fuel after it had passed through x feet of the clay pipe: f(x) = 10(0.8)x What does the number 0.8 represent?

Answer: Every foot of the pipe keeps 80% of the pollutant.

Justification:

1) the function is f(x) = 10 * (0.8)^x

2)  That means that the amount of fuel, f(x), is multiplied by 0.8 every foot it passes.

Initially the amount of poluulants 10 tons.

After 1 foot the amount pollulants remaining  is 10 * 0.8 = 8 tons

That is (8/10)*100% = 80%.

3) You can to that same calculation in a general form to jusitfiy the result for every foot.

Suppose x = n

=> f(n) = 10 * (0.8)^n

=> x + 1 = n+1 => f(n+1) = 10 * (0.8)^(n+1)

Percent of pollulant remaining, % = [ f(n+1) / f(n)] * 100

=> % = { [10 * 0.8^(n+1) ] / [10 * 0.8^(n) ] } * 100 = 0.8^ (n+1-n) * 100 = 0.8^(1) * 100 = 0.8 * 100 = 80.

So, 80% of pollulant remains after every foot o fpipe.

The number 0.8 represents that every  foot of pipe removes 20% of the pollulant, leaving the 80% ( 80/100=0.80)

A man on a 135-ft vertical cliff looks down at an angle of 16°13' and sees his friend.
iren2701 [21]
A) Use the trigonometric function and ratio cos(x) = A/H. (Adjacent/Hypotenuse)
1. cos(x) = 135/H
2. H*cos(16°) = 135
3. H = 135/cos(16°)
***Make sure calculator is in degree mode***
4. H = 140.44 ft (rounded to two decimal places)
________

b) Use the function and ratio tan(x) = O/A (Opposite/Adjacent)
1. tan(x) = O/A
2. tan(16°) = O/135
3. 135*tan(16°) = O
4. O = 38.71 ft (two decimal places)

Good luck!

Simplify -3/5x+1/2x and explain how you got it please
Licemer1 [7]

Answer:

-(1/10)x

Step-by-step explanation:

This is an addition problem.  Since the variable (x) is the same in both terms, we need only sum up the coefficients -3/5 and 1/2 and then multiply x by this sum.

-3/5x+1/2x = (-3/5 + 1/2)x

The LCD of -3/5 and 1/2 is 10.  The -3/5 term converts to -6/10 and the 1/2 term to 5/10.  Thus, we have (-6/10 + 5/10)x = -(1/10)x

An insurance company crashed four cars in succession at 5 miles per hour. The cost of repair for each of the four crashes was $
babunello [35]
Note that Range = Max – Min.
In this case, Max = 452452, Min = 221221.
Hence, Range = 452452 – 221221 = 228230.

Sample Variance:
s^2= \frac{1}{n-1} (x-\bar{x})^2

where n = 4,
\bar{x}= \frac{1}{4}( 419419 + 452452+ 404404 + 221221)=374374
Hence
s^2= \frac{1}{4-1}[( 419419 - 374374)^2 + (452452-374374)^2+\\
(404404-374374)^2+ (221221-374374)^2)]\\
= 1.0828 \times 10^{10}

Then standard deviation = s=\sqrt{1.0828 \times10^{10}}=104055.864
