Answer:

To emphasize the strength of his desire to become a pilot.

Explanation:

So, the passage is about this person learning that he can't become a pilot for the military because of their bad eyesight but they are trying to do so anyway. The word "determined" means they are going to do whatever it takes as long as they reach their goal. Let's go over the answers.

1: To emphasize the strength of his desire to become a pilot.

This is exactly what the narrator was talking about. He used the word "determined" to showcase how badly he wanted the job and how he was going to try to go and achieve their goal.

2: To show that he was willing to do the impossible.

I don't think that it's impossible to be a pilot with bad eyesight but it's improbable(not likely). I mean, if the narrator shows that he is capable of flying even with poor eyesight, then it could be possible that he becomes a pilot.

3: To suggest that only he, and no one else, inspired his goal.

While his goal is to fly, using the word "determined" doesn't suggest that he is the only one who inspired to do so. The narrator could have a hero that he looks up to and wants to be just like them, so he wants to be a pilot.

4: To imply that he achieved the goal he set out to achieve.

Even though flying is his goal, using the word "determined" does not imply that he achieved their goal. It just meant that he was going to do his best to achieve his goal, not that he actually achieved it.

So, the answer is 1: To emphasize the strength of his desire to become a pilot.
