Describe the pervasive nature of "Jim Crow" laws. How was the system enforced, formally and informally?
Pachacha [2.7K]
Jim Crow laws were laws that led to the systematic segregation and oppression of African Americans in the United States between 1876 and 1965. Jim Crow laws were a series of laws that were created and enforced at the state and local level to segregate and oppress African Americans from receiving access to state resources and institutions like education and others. The system was formally enforced by the police and by the courts. For example African Americans could be disallowed from entering restaurants or were forced to use specific water fountains or could not enter certain schools. The police in the South generally where the laws existed would enforce these laws brutally at times as well as the courts.

Robert S. McNamara (1916-2009) was the Secretary of Defense during the U.S.-Vietnam War. During his tenure, McNamara thought that the U.S. Army had to be prepared to fight the war in any conditions, so he reorganized the United States defense program.

Why is The Mayflower Compact of 1620 considered an important step in the development of democracy in America?
klio [65]
The Mayflower compact was considered a social contract, which greatly influenced the development of democracy as the founding fathers created a similar contract: the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation holds a contract to the people that their are certain parliaments that hold representatives for them, in other words a democracy. But as we soon find out this social contract was inefficient and failed, thus leading to the Great Compromise and the United States Constitution. Long story short, The Mayflower Compact set an example for the United States of America of keeping a social agreement between their people.  <span />
