Missouri Compromise brought forth by John Holmes makes Missouri a slave trade and Maine as a free state. It also prohibited slavery north of the 36º 30’ parallel.

Thomas Jefferson and his popular republican party were against this compromise for it threatens the balance of free and slave states. Jefferson expressed his disagreement of the Compromise in his letter to John Holmes, referring to the new Congress law as <em>"the knell of the union [...] hushed for the moment. But this is a reprieve only, not a final sentence."</em> And he wholly disagrees with the division of the American union.
