Capillary action is the ability of liquids to move upward or downward without the help of gravity through small spaces. Different materials affect capillary action: the more absorbent a material is, the better the capillary action. One example is a paper towel. When you put one side of a paper towel in water, notice how the water moves to the other regions of the paper towel that were not exposed directly to the water. It can even move upward!
