John Brown was an American abolitionist who advocated the use of violence or insurrection to achieve political change, particularly when it came to abolition. John Brown was involved in the Pottawatomie Creek massacre, in which he killed five supporters of slavery in Kansas. He was also involved in the raid on Harper's Ferry, which took place in Virginia (now West Virginia). For this raid, he was found guilty of treason (the first person in the history of the country) and hanged.
