This is false. The Great Migration is the displacement of 1.75 million African-Americans from the southern states to those of the Midwest, Northwest and West of the country. It took place from 1915 to 1930. The estimate of the number of displaced persons varies according to the time frame used. Black emigrants sought to escape racism and seek work in the thriving industrial cities. Some historians differentiate between the First Great Migration (1915-1940) in which 1.6 million emigrants were counted and the Second Great Migration from 1940 to 1970.

In the Second Great Migration more than 5 million people moved looking for new destinations. Many moved from Texas or Louisiana to California, where they expected to find jobs in the arms industry. From 1965-1970, 14 southern states, especially Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi, contributed to increase the net black migratory balance to other areas of the US. At the end of the Second Great Migration, the black population of the US had become clearly urban. More than 80% lived in cities. 53% remained in the southern US states while 40% lived in the Northeast and Great Lakes area and 7% in the West.
