The rapid technological advancements of the mid-twentieth century helped to make life easier, increasing the speed of communication and easing household chores. While writers of the era admired the technological advancements, they also saw a flip side. This darker side included inventions such as the atomic bomb, which was capable of massive devastation and destruction. These types of contradictions inspired writers to speculate about the true effects of technology on humanity, society, and nature.
