<span>You can't protect improvisation because it cannot be reproduced exactly as was first played. But if you take a melody, then that can be played over and over again with no variation. This falls in the category of Standard music. You can copy a lick from someone else but this isn't a violation since you will not reproduce it exactly.</span>
