Joseph Chamberlain (1836-1914) argued in favor of British imperialism in Africa.  He believed that the British empire existed for the sake of advancing British commerce and success.
He asserted that maintaining empire in Egypt and elsewhere in Africa was as beneficial and necessary to British commercial success as maintaining India in a dependent condition toward Britain.  A key line showing his intentions was when he said, <em>"I approve of the continued occupation of Egypt, and for the same reasons I have urged upon this Government, and upon previous Governments, the necessity for using every legitimate opportunity </em><span><em>to extend our influence and control in that great African continent which is now being opened up to civilization and to commerce ... and it is for the same reasons that I hold that our navy should be strengthened--until supremacy is so assured that we cannot be shaken in any of the possessions that we hold."</em>  (June 10, 1896 speech)</span>

Joseph Chamberlain was a known imperialist. He played a significant, albeit controversial, role in the Anglo-Boer War during 1899 - 1902 in South Africa. He denounced the attempt of the British South Africa company to capture the Transvaal. However, many in both Britain and Africa felt that he had a hidden agenda.

The correct answer is D) the two countries changed from being friendly allies to being fierce rivals.

The way in that the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union change after World War II was "The two countries changed from being friendly allies to being fierce rivals."

During World War II, The United States were allies. If not so friendly, both countries had a decent relationship and fought for similar interests in the region. The other two big allies were France and Great Britain.

However, after World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union became fierce and permanent rivals in what was known as the Cold War years, in which, the USSR and the US rivaled and competed in the arms race and the space race.
