Natural selection is rhe sirvival of the fittest. The fittest for the environment. If there is a sudden change in the environment say for example, flood or forest fire, etc. , species that once thrived may no longer have what it takes to survive in the changed environment. Other species might find it easier to thrive in the changed environment.

It is called the fertile crescent because of it's close proximity to many water sources. The abundant source of fresh water caused the soil to be unusually fertile for the area and allowed for farming.
