The Industrial Revolution opened new opportunities for people in America. Larger cities started to grow because the factories were there. So people that lived in rural areas of the country decided to move in pursuit of better jobs and better living conditions for their families. Immigration represented another important factor that affected the growth of the cities in the late 1800s. This growth was with no control at all and provoked consequences such as overpopulation, lack of services in some parts of the city, and crime.
