ohn Smith’s quote means that everyone who was healthy had to participate in work. He said it because the Jamestown colonists were not farmers, and they started running out of food. Their leader, John Smith, imposed strict rules on the colonists to help them survive.

The quote from Winthrop means the Puritans should be an example for the rest of the world. Winthrop made this statement to remind people they had high standards to uphold.

Penn’s quote means that people can’t be truly happy without religious freedom. He wrote this statement in the Charter of Privileges because he wanted to be sure that his colony was guaranteed religious freedom and the participation of people in their own government.
