The standard form for a parabola is (x - h)2 = 4p (y - k), where the focus is (h, k + p) and the directrix is y = k - p. If the parabola is rotated so that its vertex is (h,k) and its axis of symmetry is parallel to the x-axis, it has an equation of (y - k)2 = 4p (x - h), where the focus is (h + p, k) and the directrix (d)
is x = h - p.
So directrix is: y = k - p and the focus is at:
(h, k+p)
Since our focus is: (1, 3) and directrix is: y = 1,
thus h = 1, k+p = 3, and k-p = 1
Therefore k = 3-p, 3-p-p = 1, k = 3-p = 3-1 = 2
3-2p = 1, -2p = -3+1, -2p = -2, p = 1
Now we plug p, k, & h into standard form:
(x - h)2 = 4p (y - k)
{(x - 1)}^{2}  = 4(1)(y - 2) \\  {(x - 1)}^{2}  = 4y - 8 \\ 4y =  {(x - 1)}^{2}  + 8 \\ y =  ({(x - 1)}^{2} \div 4) + 2
y = 1/4 (x-1)^2 + 2

What is the discriminant of the quadratic equation 0 = –x2 4x – 2?
lyudmila [28]
The answer is down the page under ANSWER. here is a quick explanation first.

okay, i assume your equation is actually like this:

minus x squared plus 4 x minus

note: the proper way to type this electronically is: -x^2 + 4x - 2.

The equation you gave is known as a quadratic equation.

if you think about it, the generic (general) way of writing this quadratic equation is:

ax^2 + bx + c

a, b and c are just numbers

eg.

2x^2 + 7x + 4

looking at the general equation above

a is 2
b is 7
c is 4

you can put negatives in as well, to find out a, b and c

eg

-2x^2 - 6x - 12

so, what is a b and c?

a is -2 (must say its negative)
b is - 6 (must say negative)
c is - 12 ( again, remember its a negative number)

ANSWER

IF YOU JUST WANT THE ANSWER.

THE DISCRIMINANT IS:

4 squared minus (4 times -1 times -2)
this is 16 - 8
solution of discriminant is 8

explanation:

so, now we cleared that up.
in any quadratic equation ( like the equation you gave), the discriminant is (in general)

b2 - 4ac

use this to solve it for any quadratic equation for the discriminant

to find vslue of x

solution (perpendicular) ² + (base) ² =(hypotenus) ²

using pythagorus theorem

(16.5)²+(6.6)²=(x)²

272.25+43.56=(x)²

315.81=(x)²

√315.81=x

What is the exact distance from (−1, 4) to (6, −2)?
Morgarella [4.7K]

Answer:

The exact distance is √(29) or 29^(1/2)

Step-by-step explanation:

Find the answer using the distance formula (aka the Pythagorean theorem)

d=√(x1+x2)^2+(y1+y2)^2)

d=√(-1+6)^2+(4+-2)^2), Solve for d:

d= √((25)+(4))

d=√(29)
