O transporte ferroviário no Brasil começou no século 19 e havia muitas empresas ferroviárias diferentes. As ferrovias foram nacionalizadas pela RFFSA (Rede Ferroviária Federal, Sociedade Anônima) em 1957. Entre 1999 e 2007, a RFFSA foi desmembrada e os serviços agora são operados por uma variedade de operadores públicos e privados, incluindo América Latina Logística, Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos e SuperVia.
