You are having a conference call with the CEO of a paper company. You have interpreted the number of trees cut down versus profi

t as the function P(x) = –x^4 + x^3 + 7x^2 − x − 6. Describe to the CEO what the graph looks like and, in general, how to sketch the graph without using technology. Use complete sentences, and focus on the end behaviors of the graph and where the company will break even (where P(x) = 0).

K, so when x=0, then y=-6
so it goes through the y axis (up and down line) at y=-6

now find the x intercepts, or where y=0
factoring we get P(x)=-1(x+2)(x+1)(x-1)(x-3)
so it goes through the y axis at x=-2, x=-1, x=1, and x=3
put those points
now, the function is 4th degree and the leading coefient is negative, so it starts from bottom left and ends at bottom right
so draw a graph starting from bottom left and going through those points and ending at bottom right
since they are all odd multiplicities, the graph goes through the points to the other side of x axis instead of bouncing off

If p(a | b) = 0.4, p(b) = 0.8, and p(a) = 0.5, are the events a and b independent?
pashok25 [27]

The events A and B are not independent.

Given that,

                  P(A|B) = 0.4

                  P(A) = 0.5

                  P(B) = 0.8

Two events A and B are said to be independent, if P(A∩B) = P(A) P(B)

We have, P(A|B) = P(A∩B)/P(B)

Therefore, P(A∩B) = P(A|B) P(B) = 0.4 x 0.8 = 0.32

Now P(A) P(B) = 0.5 x 0.8 = 0.4

So P(A∩B) ≠ P(A)P(B)

Therefore, the events A and B are not independent.

Elaine is 8 years younger than her brother Tyler. The sum of their ages is 34. What are Elaine's and Tyler's age?
antoniya [11.8K]
<span>Here, Elaine = Tyler + (-8)

</span>⇒ E<span>laine + 0 + Tyler + 0 = 34
</span>⇒ T<span>yler + (-8) + 0 + Tyler + 0 = 34

And, Tyler = [(34 - (0) - (-8)] / 2

Thus, Tyler = 21
And, Elaine = 21 + (-8)
                   =13

</span>∴ T<span>yler = 21 & Elaine = 13
