The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution for the United States. They were known for being very weak and giving little to no power to the government, only to the states. Since most of the power went to the states, it was very hard to do anything. The Confederation Congress relied on the states in order to enforce any laws and 9 out of 13 of the states had to agree with it.

The people who believed in this and wanted to amend the Articles were called Federalists. On the other hand, people who were in support of the Articles and wanted the power to be in the hands of the states were called Anti-Federalists.
When the<em> Constitutional Convention of 1787</em> was called, the original goal was to amend the Articles of Confederation. This did not happen though. The Articles actually ended up getting scrapped altogether and the United States Constitution was created instead.
