The Progressive Era was a period of widespread social activism and political reforms throughout the United States from the 1890s to the 1920s. The main goals of the progressive reforms were the eliminating of corruption in the government, the removal of problems caused by industrialization, urbanization, migration of the population, uncertain working conditions, child labor. One of the main goals of the early 1900's was the prohibition of the production, transport and sale of alcohol, and its increasing detrimental effect. Due to the large influx of the population and the cheap labor force, many people were out of work, and for that reason they found comfort and a way of survival in alcoholism and crime.
