I would say that the storylines or events that are related to the theme that it is important to develop compassion and empathy are: Mrs. Dubose's words about Atticus defending Tom Robinson, and The killing of the rabid dog.
Explanation:
These two events that I chose are very related to the theme that it is important to develop compassion and empathy. Both situations make us, the readers, think about what we would do in those situations. It is impossible not to feel sorry for the mistreatment received by Tom Robinson, and for the rabid dog and the difficult situation that is having to end his life because of his illness. These are situations in which our feelings are very much involved and we can feel empathy and compassion for the situation of others because we realize how comfortable we are in our present, lucky situations and feel sorry for those who are struggling. We stop for a minute and think "lucky me I am not in this place!". And, although it is common for us to feel that way when we see someone is not having a good time, it is very important to develop compassion and empathy for our daily lives, those feelings help us to be nicer with others and help us develop as human beings.
Atticus being caring to Mrs. Dubose, in spite of her verbal harrassment of him, and her offending remarks. He sends Jem to enable her through her to a days ago, and reveals to him that she is "the most daring individual I've at any point known."
Atticus in taking the case of Tom Robinson, despite the fact that he realized that he would lose, and that it would open his family up to risk and disparagement. He realized Tom was innocent, thus indicated compassion.
