Read the following excerpt from an argumentative essay. Answer the question that follows. Critics might say that smart phones in

the classroom cause too many distractions. A 2009 article in Education Magazine made just such a claim. Although cell phones can certainly cause distractions, current research suggests that teachers and students are putting phones to better use. A 2013 Educator Insider poll reveals that 67% of high school instructors now encourage students to use phones in the classroom setting. Students without phones are actually at a disadvantage in the classroom. The poll lists Internet access, spell checks, and collaboration as three key uses of smart phones in an educational setting. How does the author handle the counterclaim?

Revise the passage by changing all of the gerunds to infinitives and all of the infinitives to gerunds.
Murrr4er [49]

Answer: "<u>To give</u> is one of the best things people can do. <u>Volunteering</u> their time shows what caring people they are".

Explanation: A gerund is a non-finite verb form that ends in -ing and functions as a noun. An infinitive is also a non-finite verb form, but it is formed with "to" and the simple form of a verb. Moreover, an infinitive can work as a noun, an adjective or an adverb. In the passage provided,<u> "giving" is a gerund because it ends in "-ing" and it is working as a noun;</u> therefore,<u> it must be transformed into an infinitive by adding "to" and writing the simple form of the verb: "give"</u>. Furthermore, <u>"to volunteer"</u> is an infinitive because it <u>is made up of "to" and the simple form "volunteer"</u>. "To volunteer" must be changed into a gerund by <u>deleting the "to" and converting "volunteer" into a gerund: "volunteering"</u>.
