Pettit Ice Cream Company produces various ice cream products for which demand is highly seasonal. The company sells more ice cre

am in warmer months and less in colder ones. Last year, the high point in production activity occurred in August when Pettit produced 50,000 gallons of ice cream at a total cost of $82,000. The low point in production activity occurred in February when the company produced 20,000 gallons of ice cream at a total cost of $46,000.
Required:
a. Use the high-low method to estimate the amount of fixed cost per month incurred by Pettit Ice Cream Company
b. Determine the total estimated monthly cost when 40,000 gallons of ice cream are produced.
c. What factors could cause the estimate determined in Requirement b to be inaccurate?
d. Explain how regression analysis could be used to improve accuracy. Your explanation should in- clude a discussion of the R2 statistic as well as the potential impact of multiple regression analysis.

Answer:

a) Fixed costs = $22,000

b) $70,000

c) The high low cost method is generally inaccurate because it only considers the extremes, the highest and lowest costs and activity levels. Generally costs are not linear, but they might follow a certain tendency. The advantages of the high low cost method is that it is fairly accurate when costs are stable, plus it is much simpler to calculate.

d) Assuming that costs follow a certain tendency, regression analysis is much more exact since it analyses the relationship between different data and different variables. When you analyze only 2 variables, a linear regression analysis will serve you. but if you need to analyse more than two variables, then you must use a multiple regression analysis.

The R² statistic basically measures how one variable's variance is affected by other variables. E.g. if R² is 0.75, then 75% of the variance of A will be explained by the variance of B.

Explanation:

variable cost using high low cost method = (highest activity cost - lowest activity cost) / (highest activity level - lowest activity level) = ($82,000 - $46,000) / (50,000 - 20,000) = $36,000 / 30,000 gallons of ice cream = $1.20 per gallon of ice cream

fixed costs = $82,000 - (50,000 x $1.20) = $22,000

40,000 gallons

$22,000 + (40,000 x $1.20) = $70,000

how regression analysis improves accuracy of high low cost method

Tampa Tribune's dominant strategy is ____________ (low price, high price, it has no dominant strategy).
Masja [62]

A new building that costs $1,400,000 has a useful life of 10 years and a scrap value of $100,000. Using straight-line depreciati
xz_007 [3.2K]

Answer:

V = $1,400,000 - $130,000t

Explanation:

Data provided in the question:

Cost of the new building = $1,400,000

Useful life = 10 years

Scrap value = $100,000

Now,

using the straight line method

Annual depreciation = [ Cost - Scrap value ] ÷ Useful life

= [$1,400,000 - $100,000 ] ÷ 10

= $130,000

Value of building = Cost of the building - Depreciation for 10 years

V = $1,400,000 - [ Annual depreciation × Time ]

V = $1,400,000 - $130,000t

1. Keira’s Kitchen Company presented the following data: Net Income $2,500,000 Preferred Stock, 50,000 shares outstanding, $100
GarryVolchara [31]

Answer:

Earnings Per Share (EPS) = $1.18

Explanation:

We know,

Earnings Per Share (EPS) = \frac{Net Income - Preferred Dividend}{No. of shares outstanding}

Here,

Net Income = $2,500,000

Preferred Dividend = Total preferred stock in dollar x cost of preferred stock

Preferred Dividend = $5,000,000 x 8% = $400,000

No. of shares outstanding table is shown below (Weighted):

Shares outstanding + Additional shares - Treasury stock =

[750,000 x stock split] + [300,000 x (8/12) x stock split] - [150,000 x (5/12) x stock split]

= (750,000 x 2) + (200,000 x 2) - (62,500 x 2)

= 1,500,000 + 400,000 - 125,000

= 1,775,000

Now, EPS = \frac{2,500,000 - 400,000}{1,775,000}

EPS = 1.18 (rounded to 2 decimal places)

Note: 1. As, there is a stock split of 2-for-1, that's why we multiply the stock by 2.

2. Since additional shares are issued on 1st May, therefore, the weight from May to December is for 8 months. Repurchased or Treasury stock should be removed from number of shares.

A common error made when solving a future value of an annuity problem is: Multiple Choice Using factor tables to help solve the
ivanzaharov [21]

Answer:

Multiplying the annual deposit and the number of years before calculating the problem.

Explanation:

An annuity can be defined as a sequence of payment that is typically made at equal intervals i.e at specific period of time.

Basically, annuity can be calculated using the compound interest formula. It is given by the mathematical expression;

A = P(1 + \frac{r}{n})^{nt}

Where;

A is the future value.

P is the principal or starting amount.

r is annual interest rate.

n is the number of times the interest is compounded in a year.

t is the number of years for the compound interest.

Additionally, the time period between each payment is called payment period.

The term of an annuity refers to the time from the beginning of the first payment made by an individual to the end of the last payment period.

A common error made when solving a future value of an annuity problem is multiplying the annual deposit and the number of years before calculating the problem.
