In the 1920s, Walter Cannon discovered that emotion-arousing incidents trigger an outpouring of stress hormones from the adrenal glands. One of the stress hormones is Cortisol. Cortisol is a steroid hormone, in the glucocorticoid class of hormones. When used as a medication, it is known as hydrocortisone.
