Between 1786 and 1787, the most of the fighting took place in and around Springfield. Daniel Shays, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, led 4000 rebels, sometimes known as Shaysites, in a demonstration against racial and economic inequities. Shays, a farmworker from Massachusetts, joined the Continental Army at the start of the Revolutionary War, participated in the Battles of Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, and Saratoga, and was eventually wounded in battle.
