British Parliament passed the Stamp Act to assist replenish their finances after the costly Seven Years’ War with France. Part of the revenue from the Stamp Act would be wont to maintain several regiments of British soldiers in North America to take care of peace between Native Americans and therefore the colonists. Moreover, since colonial juries had proven notoriously reluctant to seek out smugglers guilty of their crimes, violators of the Stamp Act might be tried and convicted without juries within the vice-admiralty courts.

Answer:

The purpose of the tax was to pay for British military troops stationed in the American colonies after the French and Indian War, but the colonists had never feared a French invasion to begin with, and they contended that they had already paid their share of the war expenses.
