Read the following paragraph and select the correct answer. She came to know what heavy housework meant and the odious cares of

the kitchen. She washed the dishes, using her dainty fingers and rosy nails on greasy pots and pans. She washed the soiled linen, the shirts and the dishcloths, which she dried upon a line; she carried the slops down to the street every morning and carried up the water, stopping for breath at every landing. And dressed like a woman of the people, she went to the fruiterer, the grocer, the butcher, a basket on her arm, bargaining, meeting with impertinence, defending her miserable money, sou by sou. (from "The Necklace," by Guy de Maupassant) What is the topic sentence of this paragraph? She knew now what meant the duties of the household, the heavy work of the kitchen. Her pretty hands soon lost all semblance of the care of bygone days. She washed the soiled linen and dried it in her room. She defended cent by cent her miserable money.

The correct option is this: SHE KNEW NOW WHAT MEANT THE DUTIES OF THE HOUSEHOLD, THE HEAVY WORK OF THE KITCHEN.
A topic sentence is a sentence in a paragraph which expresses the major topic or idea that is discussed in that paragraph. A topic sentence can be easily recognized in a paragraph because it is always the opening sentence of the paragraph. The major function of the other sentences in a paragraph is to support the topic sentence.

Read the passage and answer the question. [1620] . . . so as there died sometimes two or three of a day, in the foresaid time; t
Elenna [48]
Most of the above passage includes descriptions of the tasks that the caretakers did for the sick, but if you look where Bradford first mentions those caretakers, you can see just how he feels about them. This phrase, "there was but six or seven sound persons, who, to their great commendations be in spoken, spared no pains, night nor day, but with abundance of toil and hazard of their own health" holds the key. If you look closely at this phrase, Bradford describes how many people acted as caretakers (six or seven) and includes a single word, "commendations," that means praise. To suggests they deserve "great commendations" tells the reader that Bradford feels like these caretakers deserve the highest praise for what they do. My answer, then, would be the word "commendations."
