Ionic compounds are those compounds which are made up of ions. These ions can exist as positive or negative ions. Those ions which has tendency to lose electrons are said to be cations (positive ions) such as metals and those ions which has tendency to gain electrons are said to be anions (negative ions) such as non-metals.

The formula for ionic compounds are given as:

First, the symbols of the cation and anion should be identified. After that, charge on the cation and anion should be identified. Write the chemical formula with the help of drop and swap method.

Now,

The chemical symbols for Aluminium is Al and for chlorine is Cl.

The charge on Al is +3 and on Cl is -1, neglect the positive and negative signs and by using drop and swap method i.e. the charge on the aluminium will go as a subscript of the chlorine and the charge on the chlorine will go as a subscript of the aluminium which is shown in the image.

Thus, the chemical formula between Al and Cl is AlCl_{3}.

How many moles are in 175g<br> (Ca(NO3)2
zheka24 [161]

Answer:

appx. 1.07 moles

Explanation:

175g of molecule Ca(NO3)2

To find the # of moles, use stoichoimetry.

1. We need the molar mass of Ca(NO3)2.

Ca mass: 40.08 g

NO3 mass: N + 3(O) --> 14.01 + 3(16.00) --> 62.01

Molar mass = Ca + 2(NO3) --> 40.08 + 2(62.01) --> 164.1 g

2. write out the calculation

175g Ca(NO3)2 * (1 mole Ca(NO3)2)/(molar mass of Ca(NO3)2)

175 g Ca(NO3)2 * (1 mole Ca(NO3)2)/(164.1 g Ca(NO3)2)

The g units cancel out and we're left with moles.

Simply perform the calculation now: 175*1/164.1 ≅1.07 moles
