Often in the exposition there will be little hints, but it is through the decision making process of the character that we get to see the personality traits.

Answer:

Authors usually don’t just blurt out all the character traits right then and there. Usually, they inform us throughout the storyline. They give it all away slowly, revealing more and more about the character as their story also goes on.
