Answer:

C. The dog survives the cold, while the man does not.

Explanation:

The short story <em>"To Build A Fire'"</em>by Jack London tells the story of how the unnamed protagonist ignored the warnings and advice of people. This led to his death and also shows the conflict of nature and man.

The man had wanted to reach the mining camp at Henderson Creek where his friend were staying. But considering the Yukon mountains, and the freezing temperature, an old man had warned him not to continue with his plan. But ignoring his advice and warnings, he went ahead taking along with him a native dog. Even the dog seemed to know it was no weather to move out. Along the way, the cold began to increase and by the end of the story, we find the dog alone reached the camp. The man had died on the way, from the severe cold. Thus, the best example among the questions is that the dog survives the cold while the man does not.

"And he lost his mind in consequence?"
alexdok [17]

Answer: B) as a result

Explanation:

The meaning of the phrase "in consequence" is "as a result."

If something happens first, and something else happens afterwards in consequence, it happens as a result of the first event.

In this particular example, a man has lost his mind because of an event that is not mentioned, and has not been sane since then. His insanity is, therefore, a result (or a consequence) of that event. We can assume that the person described a traumatic event that the man experienced, and the other person replied with a question:<em> "And he lost his mind in consequence?" </em>
