The island of Cuba was discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus during his first trip toward the New World. Columbus had been sponsored by the Spanish monarchs to carry out this voyage; consequently, in honor to these monarchs, he called the island Juana. The island then received various names until it was finally called Cuba, a variant of her aboriginal name Cubanascan.
