All you have to do is make and simplify a fraction. In this case, there are 6 friends going into 4 pears, so the fraction is 6/4. Then we can simplify that because they are both divisible by 2. So if we divide both by 2, our fraction becomes 3/2. Then we make that into a mixed number, with 3 going into 2 once with 1 left over. That means the answer is 1 1/2.

(3 + 4)

and not

(3-4)

That's where he messed up.
